Here they are (blogpost to follow)

Janey ran the Marathon!

What a day - long and gruelling (and that was just for the spectators!)
It's an early start whatever you're doing that day - Jane was out of the house at 06:45 as her start (the Blue Start) was at the other side of town. We left about an hour later and got a train almost immediately. We got off at London Bridge tube and walked parallel to the river towards Tower Bridge, along Tooley St and we found the pub, already awake with people and stuff happening, by about 9am.
We got ourselves set up with banner and balloons and settled down to wait. We didn't have to wait long for the 1st excitement....Mark! It'd had been a LONG time since I'd seen him and it was so lovely to catch up. Mum and Dad said 'what a lovely young man that Mark is'!!! I'm inclined to agree. After that we didn't have too long to wait until the elite ladies and wheelchair competitors came whizzing past (and I DO mean whizzing) check out the photies of them (blurry)!
Then Emma arrived with her friend Gill, they were most impressed with our spot - it was a very good find!
Next exciting thing was the elite men - they went past even quicker - so quick that we missed Baldini - reigning Olympic Champion - who we'd been waiting for for at least 20 minutes so we could all shout 'Forza Italia' - so much for that idea!
After that we settled down to wait for our own runners
  • Janie (superhero champion sister)
  • Kev Lally (friend from school who Emma and I have known since we were 5)
  • Ruth (Mark's other half & my good friend)
  • Steve (Emma's other half)
Just on the 11 O'Clock mark, the heavens opened. We were all ferreting about in our bags looking for brollies, and packing away things so they'd not get wet, when Mum felt a tap on her shoulder - OOOOH she cried! I looked up - It was Kevin - winging past at about 11:10 - some kind of monster pace there. I saw the back of his head, and that was it - he zoomed off! We were SOOOOO impressed!
11:50 brought Ruthie! High as a kite and twice as excited! (Check out her pics) She only stopped to get another bit of food and with an 'I love you all' she zipped off - heading for a really stonking 4:30 pace. We were in awe!
Janie was the next to pitch up - around 12:20 the rain had stopped a little and so we got a bit of a view of her coming along the road - grinning like the Cheshire Cat!!! She hung out with us for a good few minutes - even popping to the loo in the pub (where the kind ladies let her jump the queue!!!) - before having an energy gel and zooming off herself - grinning and smiling along the way.
A few minutes after that, Steve stopped by for a brief peck on the cheek with Emma, but was obviously on a roll and couldn't stop for long. Off he went and the support team were on their own again.
After a fond farewell we went our separate ways with Mum, Dad, Daniel and I going for a bit of a wander along the Thames, before heading to Charing Cross for the end of the race.
We met up with Kev for an hour or so before he had to go and get on the bus home (which was lovely) and then, by about 3pm we were at the designated meeting place to await the championessa!
We were *just* about starting to get worried when she turned up at about 3:40, her dodgy knee having given her gyp for the last few miles.
We then headed back to Ealing for a celebratory TAPAS meal (close to home) and then went back to the flat and we all crashed - it was pretty knackering for the spectators as well!!!!
Too much excitement for one day!

What's the weather doing?

It's 3pm Sunday afternoon and we're watching the snow, again, probably for the 6th or 7th time this weekend! In between the snow showers we've had BIG hailstones (when we were walking accross Sainsbury's carpark) and bright sunshine! What on earth is going on with the weather?

Another one of Dan and Buzz

The Birds (Part 2.2)

After having brought the 1st birds back to the centre and had our cup of tea, we wandered back down to the field to meet the final 3 birds.
First out was this beauty - now I can't remember the breed exactly - but I do recall that in the US they called it a hawk, and in the UK a buzzard. Anyway this one had an amazing feat of circling very very high up on the thermals, and the at a point, just tucking its wings in and coming in like a bullet! The 1st time it happened, we all took a step back! I'm sure I heard that "bomb-whine" sound effect in the background! As you can see, she had the most beautiful colouring. Snowy white chest feathers and then tawny highlights on back, legs and wings.

Next on the list was one of my favourites, the harris hawk. Super intelligent birds - they hunt in packs (the only bids to do so). Not only intelligent but absolutely beautiful; the dark brown colouring and little white tips to the tail - they're incredibly elegant in flight - the big tail allows great manoeverability - she was weaving in and out of the group of us as we were standing round waiting for our turn. The falconry centre offer an afternoon session after our morning 'meet the birds' (we didn't do it but I'd love to) and that's when you take out a pack of harris hawks and see if they can bring you home a rabbit for your stew pot!

So, finally, last on the list was the Centre's piece-de-resistance - an eagle! Not many places fly eagles to glove - I think it's something to do with the fact that they'd crush all the bones in your wrist with one squeeze of a talon, but they have a few that have been hand reared and therefore are in that 'thinking they're human' mode! Last time I was there, we flew the big sea eagle - it's a bit like having an alsatian flying towards you! Most impressive! This time we got the Bataleur Eagle - which was like having Professor Yaffle coming at ya....but scarier! This bird was a full stone - weighed loads compared with even the bigger hawk/buzzards (remember them who chase labradors!) and we had to have the chainmail glove, to protect from the talons, and we only got one go with him as he was a BIG bird and they find it hard to fly alot (unlike the harris hawk and the eagle owl who just kept bombing back and forth from their perch for the food). As you can see from the pic, he kept wandering around on the ground and walked like a little old man. He did have the most amazing colouring. Looked like someone had painted him in big blocks of brown, white and black. His main prey are snakes, so he's well-hard!

Anyway, that was our bidy experience - we had a really superb day - we both adore the birds, they're gorgeous - and we took far more piccies than have been shown here so if you want to see the rest then head on over to Picassa using this link, and peruse all the rest of em!
